Could be! Who knows?

“Could it be, yes it could. Something’s coming, something good, if I can wait…”

Maybe you recognize Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics to “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story. It’s been a favorite of mine for many years, both the show and the song.

I love that feeling that something good is about to happen. It’s the opposite of that feeling of dread we sometimes get, with or without cause, when we just know something bad is going to happen. The truth is I probably recognize the feeling of dread more often than the feeling of anticipation and sweetness. Maybe that is because I confess I expect more bad things to happen than good.

But why? Why should we expect more bad things? God has promised us good things! What if it is just a matter of looking for those good things? What if the good things are already right here, or maybe just around the corner, and we simply haven’t noticed yet?

After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, he was led out into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by the devil. It’s important to remember that he wasn’t led into the wilderness by the devil. He was led by the Spirit. He needed to be out in the wilderness to clear his head and process all that had happened and was happening to him. It was there that the devil tempted him to use his power for his own good rather than to serve God. Then Matthew 4:17 says, “From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.'”

Repent! Remember, repent literally means turn around. Hey! Turn around, you’re headed in the wrong direction. Come back this way toward God. The kingdom of heaven is “… only just out of reach, Down the block, on a beach, Under a tree. I got a feeling there’s a miracle due, Gonna come true,Coming to me!” Okay that last bit is back to Sondheim, but it captures the essence of what Jesus is saying.

It’s close, people! The kingdom of heaven is right around the corner, all we have to do is turn around and head back toward God and live there. It is a miracle, but not just for me. It’s a completely life-changing event for you and me and for everyone else who will turn around and head for it.
